Genet Gebrezgiabher is an Ethiopian-American visual artist based in Northern Virginia, working primarily in painting and drawing as a means of storytelling and self-expression. Her work centers figures from the African diaspora, exploring both personal and collective narratives through a rich visual language.
She began her artistic journey with graphite and charcoal portraits, eventually expanding into painting. Her practice has since grown to encompass a broader range of figurative and conceptual approaches, including an ongoing exploration of her own roots and cultural heritage, as well as the diverse lived experiences within the African diaspora. Known for her detailed execution and vibrant use of color, her paintings aim not only to depict physical presence, but also to express emotion, spirit, and narrative. She views art as a shared space, one that invites introspection, dialogue, and connection between viewer and subject.
Her work has been shown in museum and local exhibitions, including a current group exhibition at the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia (BHMVA) on view through December 2025, as well as through private commissions that have helped shape her perspective and practice. She continues to build a body of work that honors the complexity of people and the layered nature of human experience, with a growing emphasis on emotional depth and the psychological currents that shape our inner lives.
